THE TOP TEN SWING VENUES I MISS THE MOST

The Derby

I was on Facebook and saw people reminiscing about the beloved Derby nightclub.  I loved that place too.  That got me thinking about some of the other great swing venues we’ve had in Southern California and the great memories I made at each of them.  So, for all of you old-time swing dancers out there, Continue Reading…

GOODBYE, PATTY ANDREWS (1918-2013)

Because of their performances preserved on film, the Andrews Sisters have been special favorites in the Southern California swing scene.  This clip from “Buck Privates” features the Andrews Sisters performing probably their most famous song.  Patty is the “lead singer” of the group. Thank you for the music Patty! – Brian

REVIEW: THE EDISON WITH THE NEW RECESSIONAIRES

On Thursday, December 27th, I joined a group of swing dancers who Lindy-bombed The Edison to the tunes of the New Recessionaires! Turnout was good and at times the dance floor was packed.  There were some really excellent dancers there, along with some beginners just trying to get by.  I personally like the Recessionaires, which Continue Reading…

LA LINDY HOP PICK: LET’S LINDY BOMB THE EDISON ON THURSDAY!!

Dance floor at the Edison

If you’ve never been there, The Edison is one of the most incredible public spaces in Los Angeles.  Frequently the setting for steampunk and other unique events, the Edison is lit with glowing incandescent lamps and populated with huge extinct furnaces and electrical generators.

VENUE PROFILE: LINDY HOP STOP ROCKS WITH JOHNNY BOYD!

This is the first in a series of “venue profiles” that I hope do to on every major swing dance venue in Los Angeles and Orange County. When Lindy Hop Stop started on a Thursday night in 2010, I thought “there’s no way it can compete with Lindy Groove!”  But over two years later, it Continue Reading…

LA LINDY HOP PICK: ELECTRO SWING CLUB HOLLYWOOD NIGHT #3!

WHY ALL OF THE CHANGES TO LA LINDY HOP?

Sorry, please go to this story instead!!! – Brian Although the site cosmetically doesn’t look that different from before, it’s totally different under the hood.  I moved the site to a content management system for several reasons:

THE SLOW DEATH OF PARTNER DANCING?

I recently found a cool tool called Google Trends. You type in any search phrase, and it tells you many people were searching for that phrase over time. So, I typed in “swing dance” and some other partner dances and found ALL to be on the decline! The blue bar represents how many people searched Continue Reading…

SWINGTRONIC AT POUR VOUS

Swingtronic at Pour Vous

Don’t be misled by the plain white building across the street from Paramount Studios. When you walk into Pour Vous, you will be transported back in time to a turn-of-the-century Parisian cocktail lounge. On your right is a circular conversation pit topped by a translucent white dome. In front of you is a spectacular bar Continue Reading…

HIP KITTY JAZZ

NOTE:This venue is CLOSED! This is a “bring-your-own-partner” night club that serves fondue and has a funky 60’s style in the old Claremont packing house with wood floor. It’s not primarily a dance venue. There is a smallish dance floor in front of the stage, enough for 5-6 couples. If there are no dancers they Continue Reading…

THIRD STREET SWINGERS AT TONGVA PARK SANTA MONICA

Swing dancing at Tongva Park

This group started out dancing at Third Street Promenade, but now they mainly dance at Tongva Park in Santa Monica on Sunday afternoons. Surface is a smooth pebble walkway, but it’s actually surprisingly easy to dance on! Music is provided by DJ Fons on his portable sound system. Bring your favorite songs to play if Continue Reading…

Looks like they’ll be playing “Gangnam Style” at Lindy Groove! There’s no excuse not to learn it now – check out the step-by-step instructional video below!

LAST DAY OF SWING DANCING AT DISNEY’S CARNATION PLAZA

Swing dancing at Disney’s Carnation Plaza went out with a bang on Saturday April 28th with a huge turnout of swing dancers to salute this historic swing dance venue. I personally made a lot of great memories here. Swing dancing will move to Downtown Disney while the Plaza gets renovated (and is supposed to return Continue Reading…
