Imagine Texas dance halls in the 1950s, when Western Swing bands attracted dancers and music lovers to packed dance floors almost every night of the week.
In roadhouses and honky tonks all over the southwest, the best Western swing musicians were featured in bands large and small. They were the rock stars of the era.
This is the experience that awaits you in Long Beach in the historic art deco dance hall dubbed At The Top.
It’s the best from out of the West – a Sunday matinee show Dec. 4 from 2-8 pm celebrating all things Western swing. It’s a dancer’s dream.
Deke Dickerson’s all-star band, The Kings of Western Swing, headlines the dance festival. Deke’s Ameripolitan-award winning musicianship alone is worth the price of admission.
His vintage band includes such luminaries as Carl Sonny Leyland on piano, Dave Berzansky on pedal steel, Gerard Egan on guitar, Lakshmi Ramirez on bass and Chris Sprague on drums – a real dream team of Western swing talent.
The Southwest Biscuit Company, led by co-producerJody Byrd, is a creative Western swing band making a big splash in Southern Calif. They are current nominees for the coveted 2023 Ameripolitan Western Swing band award. This 6-piece ensemble covers the classics, as well as mighty fine Western swing material they write and arrange themselves.
Then there are the Honky Tonk Angels – five talented female vocalists performing alone and in various formats throughout the afternoon: Dani Colace, Lil’ Sue, Miss Mac, Mozzy Dee and Ukulena add their cowgirl vocals to the mix, fronting the house band formed by steel guitarist Jordan Bush.
As a special treat, Carolyn Sills opens the festivities with her 90th-birthday tribute to Patsy Cline, joined by Gerard Egan and backed by Jordan’s house band. Her group, the Carolyn Sills Combo, hails from Santa Cruz, and have earned their own Ameripolitan Award for Western Swing band.
We will have DJ Jump Blues Richard slinging vintage Western swing with a little honky tonk and rockabilly to keep you out on the big dance floor.
Sample the Chuckwagon BBQ that features Texas Ribs, Pulled Pork and BBQ Chicken along with several side dishes and veggie treats. People are still raving about the food served at the previous Barndance Boogie.
