Western swing is about as rootsy as great music gets, considering it originated in the 1930s – and its influences are blues, honky tonk, jazz and polka. Combined, the music creates a swingin’ beat that is eminently danceable and listenable.
On the auspicious occasion of Bob Wills’ 119th birthday (born March 6, 1905), Stellar Shows presents a Western swing celebration featuring three of the hottest bands performing in the genre, plus music historian Big Sandy as our DJ on Sunday, April 28.
Dave Stuckey & the Hoot Owls bring a ​limitless jukebox of western swing to any dance party – and this festival show allows them to dig deep into their musical library to showcase their particular brand of vintage jazz. Stuckey holds the title of Ameripolitan Western Swing Male.
The Southwest Biscuit Co. is everything that is good about Western swing, retro jazz and big band orchestras. Whether it’s an original number or a classic cover, the band evokes memories of Bob Wills and Hank Penny with all the right rhythms, vocal inflections – and tasty licks on their solos. SW Biscuit Co. was Ameripolitan’s 2023 nominee for Western Swing Group of the year.
Sterling Drake hails from Nashville and is the 2024 Ameripolitan Honky Tonk Male of the Year. His talent and knowledge of western swing makes him a natural for this Bob Wills celebration. Don’t miss a chance to see a real up-and-comer who is outstanding in the field of hillbilly jazz.
