Chester Whitmore’s Central Ave. Revue
Step Back in Time for a Night of Swing, Jazz, and Old Hollywood Glamour
Maxwell DeMille presents a spectacular one-night-only event:
Chester Whitmore & the Opus One Big Band—featuring the legendary choreographer and performer from the Oscar-winning film La La Land.
Prepare to be transported to the golden era of jazz, where the music was hot, the dance floors sizzled, and the lights of Central Avenue’s legendary nightclubs—the Downbeat, the Club Alabam—shone bright with Hollywood’s elite and L.A.’s finest musicians.
The Music: A Roaring Revue of Swing and Jazz
Chester Whitmore’s electrifying 18-piece orchestra revives the red-hot rhythms of the 1920s through the 1940s, channeling the iconic sounds of:
Duke Ellington
Count Basie
Chick Webb
Jimmy Lunceford
Cab Calloway
From the Cotton Club to the Savoy Ballroom, this high-energy show delivers the syncopated swing, bold brass, and irresistible beats that made America dance.
Central Avenue: Where Jazz History Was Made
Long before the Sunset Strip, Central Avenue was the beating heart of L.A. nightlife—a place where jazz royalty reigned and Hollywood stars flocked to hear the latest, hottest sounds in town.
By day, it was a thriving hub for Black-owned businesses and cultural innovation.
By night, it was a dazzling, all-night scene where jazz greats pushed boundaries, shaping the sound of a generation.
From the 1920s to the early 1950s, Central Avenue’s jazz scene rivaled Harlem and New Orleans, creating a legacy that still echoes today.
Dress to the nines, grab a cocktail, and prepare to swing the night away.
One night only. Don’t miss this chance to relive the magic.
Not dining? Admission is $25 at the door.

About the Venue: The Cicada Club

The Cicada Restaurant in downtown LA is one of my favorite vintage swing dance venues. You really feel like you’re going back in time when you enter this amazing Art Deco space, which has been featured on many movies and TV shows. The bands on Swing nights are always authentic.

This is primarily a restaurant and bar, not a dedicated Swing dance venue, although there are some great Swing dance nights there. Check the Lindy Calendar to see what nights have Swing dancing. Usually, it’s best to bring your own partner, but sometimes there can be many folks to dance with.

There is a formal dress code – it would be a shame for people in shorts and t-shirts to ruin the 1930’s feel. Plus, can be fun to dress up once in a while, so bring your dance crew and give the Cicada Club a try! Front floor is somewhat small, but you can also dance on the marble floor upstairs which is usually empty.
