As someone who has been going to see the Hot Club regularly for several years, and married to someone who has been going since not long after the Hot Club began its Monday night residency more than a decade ago, I am greatly saddened by the way the swing dancers have taken over the nights without any regard for those of us who come to see and enjoy the band and its music. You bump into us and others routinely, and not once have I seen any of you apologize or even seem to acknowledge that anyone else is there. And you completely obscure the views — a great part of my enjoyment of these nights has been watching these virtuoso musicians play, but now all I can see much of the time is your show-off moves. But you seem oblivious to anyone other than yourselves, including the band. For the little connection you seem to show to the musicians you might as well be dancing on the sidewalk in front or the patio in back, and maybe that would be a good idea. You would have your space and we would have ours. Regardless, please be considerate and respectful for us Hot Club regulars who have come to count on these nights for joy and camaraderie.

Thanks! Just hope those who have been coming and taking over the club get the message.

Swing Dancers: You’re ruining Monday Nights at the Cinema Bar. This isn’t a Swing Dance or ballroom venue! This is a barroom and an established place where, on Monday nights for over 12 years, loyal fans of Hot Club of Los Angeles have come to watch and hear this band perform. You take over the bar like it’s a ballroom, blocking the view of the band, slamming into customers at the bar, taking over all the tables AND the entire floor, not ordering drinks, completely oblivious to the other people in the room. The band relies on tips, the bar and the band rely on customers to buy drinks. And most importantly, Hot Club of Los Angeles is NOT background music for you to show off what you’ve learned in your classes. Be respectful. Be mindful. Find another venue before you push everyone away.
